Liberty Applique...that is...transformer-free

Our showroom, our workshop, frequented by our customers, have always witnessed the sharing of needs, wants and desires. A place that represents not only our work but also our energy. Here in the heart of MGvisio, we breathe our successes, but also our failures, our struggles, our frustrations, our joys, our insights, in a word: “Passion,” the one for our work.

Often, right in the workshop, some of our customers, professional outfitters, would tell us about the difficulties they encountered during the installation phase with certain types of LED lamps.

The more imaginative ones, urged us to make lamps that had no external transformer. The architects and interior designers, to whom we used to tell about the research behind our lamps with aesthetic and design impact asked us, the possibility of having lamps with essential lines that could be applied on the wall, without the encumbrance of the external transformer. Different customers with common needs. Hence, ours, which until then was just an imaginative idea, began to take shape: at that moment only in our minds. But we know well that form starts from an idea: always!!!! And just as we began to imagine our driveless lamp already realized, our journey began.

The road was filled with obstacles and difficulties; but along the way, like a mountain to be climbed, we always saw her on the horizon, our summit … our lamp! Let the journey begin! As in any self-respecting path, there was no shortage of obstacles and difficulties. We did, in fact, run into technical problems related to space: “Making a light source without the transformer the size of a led strip?” “How to fit all the components into an inch of width?” Unanswered questions. Our dream appeared a utopia!!! But the initial despondency was short-lived; the desire to materialize our dream was stronger and more powerful.

So the R&D team explored what the market had to offer and began an in-depth analysis of how to overcome the difficulties. After numerous attempts, during which we experimented with state-of-the-art components, we finally found the solution we hoped for. But, alas! Our joy did not last long. A difficulty arose related to the dissipation of the component itself. The base of the strip was not optimal for heat dissipation. Although we had used innovative elements, the number of tracks was too high, this had become an insurmountable problem. Despondency took over; we were now ready to turn around. The lamp, which we visualized in our minds already made, was now a blur: it was “going out!” But ours is a team effort: many minds, insights, passions. Everyone puts in his own, with our flaws but also with our virtues; we offer what life experience has taught us. This is the strength of MGvisio: individuality put at the service of common work. And just when we were about to abandon the project, the mind of one of our collaborators found the solution; his intuition rekindled hope; we thus embarked on a path that until then because of our know-how we did not think could be traveled.

So enthusiasm rekindled our hearts and our minds resumed the search. We found, a company that made the hollow aluminum boards in order to perform a“dual light.” The experiment seemed impossible: it was like trying to separate water without having the necessary means. We had a goal with a very high percentage of uncertainty. We went ahead anyway. After much work on the board design, we sent the design fileserver to the board supplier. We waited patiently for him to send us the prototype. The wait was long and exhausting. And the testing of the prototype even worse: another failure and great frustration on the part of all of us. Technical dissipation was still a problem. The tracks were too close together, causing numerous short circuits. But our tenacity did not abandon us: we analyzed what might be a more feasible solution. We had to work on the geometry of the board.

Every long journey is made up of many individual steps. After many attempts we finally managed to satisfy our customers by creating minimal wall or ceiling lamps without the help of the cumbersome transformers. Thus was born the “LIberty and Infinity” Series.
